Paranjpe set to become second coach at Board's academy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India's National Academy committee, headed by former BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur is all set to confirm the appointment of Vasu Paranjpe as the second coach.

Initially, Paranjpe would be required to leave Mumbai for three months. He has been a coach at the Elf Academy in Mumbai for the last three years.

Though Paranjpe has not played international cricket, he has been a leading coach for many years. He was a National coach in 1988.

The 62-year-old Paranjpe was born in Mehsana (Gujarat) and played for Baroda and Bombay in the Ranji Trophy. During his stay in Bangalore, he will miss wife Lalita who is a lecturer in English and head of the department in Ruia college at Matunga. His two daughters Radhika and Subhada are married and are doctors by profession. Vasu's son Jatin plays for Mumbai. He played three One Day Internationals in the Sahara Cup a few seasons ago.

The National Academy committee had earlier announced Roger Binny as coach and Hanumant Singh as director. Since the academy is to groom budding cricketers, Binny was the Board's first choice as he was the coach of the India under-19 team which won the World Cup recently. The academy is to commence from May 1.

The Board had recently invited former Australian wicket-keeper Rodney Marsh to give his views on the academy. The Board is also likely to seek Sunil Gavaskar's advice as and when required. Besides this, the Indian team's physio Andrew Leipus is arriving with some new ideas after a visit to the academy in Johannesburg.
