PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA 1985-86

At Karachi, November 7, 8, 9, 11

15-Apr-1987
At Karachi, November 7, 8, 9, 11. Pakistan won by ten wickets. Sri Lanka, who elected to bat, were bowled out twice on a pitch which took spin from the first day. In the first innings it was the leg-spinner, Abdul Qadir, who did the damage; in the second, the off-spinner, Tauseef Ahmed, took five wickets in a Test for the first time. In between, De Mel, moving the ball skilfully off the seam, dismissed the top six batsmen in the Pakistan order to return his best figures for Sri Lanka. It was not an easy match for batsmen. However, Miandad, Ramiz, who replaced Zaheer, and Imran each played crucial, responsible innings on the second day as Pakistan, 68 for four at lunch, improved to 294 for nine at the close. Only De Silva, with his second hundred of the series (265 minutes, sixteen 4s) could match their dedication. Of Sri Lanka's 216 for eight at the end of the third day, he had scored 103 not out. In contrast to the difficulties of the first three days, Mudassar and Mohsin hit off the runs required for victory in almost even time. In Sri Lanka's second innings Imran took over the captaincy, Javed Miandad having fractured his right thumb, and when Imran was unfit on the fourth day, Mudassar led the side.
