Andrew McDonald and Lloyd Mash will return for Victoria's Pura Cup match against Tasmania on Friday, but the fast bowlers Peter Siddle and Dirk Nannes are out injured. McDonald, the allrounder, is making a second comeback after shoulder surgery but is unlikely to bowl.
Mash has been included after impressing with 95 for the Cricket Australia Chairman's XI against the Sri Lankans, with Michael Klinger missing out. Siddle dislocated his right shoulder during a fielding session at training on Monday, which was a blow following a promising start to the season. Scans revealed no severe structural damage, although he could be out for up to six weeks. Nannes will miss out due to ankle tendonitis.
Greg Shipperd, the Bushrangers coach, was understandably disappointed. "It's not the news we wanted but we can still put together a really good attack," he said. "We are proud of our depth amongst our new-ball bowlers. They have shown again and again their ability to step up and that's what we will be looking for against an in-form Tasmanian side."
He added that Victoria are determined to make amends following their 288-run drubbing against Western Australia. "The group was really stung and disappointed by the way we played last match and are keen to make amends. We are looking to play very competitive, strong cricket and want to bounce back."
Ben Hilfenhaus is free for Tasmania after being released from the first Test squad against Sri Lanka, but a pitch inspection will determine whether they choose an extra fast bowler in Brendan Drew or whether they will give the offspinner Jason Krejza his first outing this season.
