Kenya v South Africa

At Amstelveen, May 26

15-Apr-2000
At Amstelveen, May 26. South Africa won by seven wickets. Toss: South Africa.
The World Cup crossed to the Continent as the Netherlands staged its first official one-day international. Amstelveen, a southern suburb of Amsterdam, provided a picturesque ground, and a genuine grass pitch, provoking plenty of cannabis jokes. The first hour hinted that Kenya could pull off a surprise, as their openers galloped to 66 by the 16th over; Shah showed no fear of Donald and his colleagues. But, once Elworthy made the breakthrough, the South Africans got a grip on the game, and Klusener took five wickets to claim his third consecutive match award. For once, he was not required to bat as well. A target of 153 hardly extended South Africa, though they used up a leisurely 41 overs; Gibbs hit a run-a-ball 38, and then Kallis, who almost missed the match after forgetting to bring his passport, and Cullinan completed the job.
Man of the Match: L. Klusener. Attendance: 4,260.
