†India v England 1989-90

Toss: India

15-Apr-1991
Toss: India.
An astonishing century by Chetan Sharma, in truth little more than a slog, brought about England's first defeat of the tournament. Promoting Chetan in the order to wrest control from England's bowlers was a gamble. Had Smith caught him on the boundary when he was 3, it would have misfired. As it was, Chetan put on 105 with Sidhu and, surviving the chance of a run-out when 74 and a catch to Gooch moments later, he reached his century and won the match with his eighth four. He faced 96 balls and also hit a six. England, having begun their innings well, rather lost their way for a time. Stewart, who moved to his half-century with a six off Chetan, batted well for his 61, but it was Lamb (109 balls), engineering 55 from the last five overs, who was most responsible for England's setting a challenging target.
Man of the Match: Chetan Sharma.
