At Ahmedabad, October 26, 2006 (day/night). West Indies won by three wickets. West Indies
2 pts. Toss: West Indies.
Until a late wobble led to an unexpectedly close finish, West Indies were always in control.
When Morton fell after a composed 45, only 12 were needed from 13 balls. But three more
wickets tumbled, including Sarwan and Lara, and India scented an unlikely win. The field closed
in, and Samuels had to carve one down to third man to seal the victory. Sarwan had anchored
the innings after the traditional brisk start from Gayle, while Chanderpaul's measured approach
defused the threat posed by India's opening bowlers. In truth, 223 was never going to be enough
to defend for an Indian side which looked lethargic after a long break for the Diwali holiday.
Bradshaw and Taylor kept the runs down early on and, although Dravid and Yuvraj Singh scripted
a revival of sorts, the momentum was lost when they both departed in the 31st over. It was left
to Dhoni to improvise a half-century which featured two massive swipes for six, but it was too
little, and far too late.
Man of the Match: S. Chanderpaul.
