Sourav Ganguly, the Bengal captain, has been cautioned for showing dissent to an umpiring decision during the Ranji Trophy match against Punjab at Mohali.
"We cautioned him as he had shown dissent but the issue is settled now," Rajo Pankule, the match referee, told PTI. He said Ganguly had shown dissent after umpire S Ravindram turned down one of his appeals.
Talking to reporters after Bengal's victory over Punjab, Ganguly tried to play down the incident. "There was lots of noise on the field and we got a bit excited. The match referee asked what had happened, but that was it."
Ganguly had also expressed his displeasure after being ruled lbw for 43 in the second innings. When a reporter asked if it was a controversial decision, he replied, "now that you have said it yourself, do I need to say more".
Ganguly, who is trying to make a comeback into the national team, did not comment on India's poor performances. "I am far away in Mohali and they are playing in South Africa. I can't really comment on anything except hoping that they will do better. I know anything I say will make headlines," and added that he was "sure the team under him [Dravid] will do well".
