England v Sri Lanka

15-Apr-2004

At Sydney, January 13, 2003 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 31 runs. Sri Lanka 5 pts, England 1 pt. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Jayasuriya's second hundred in five days reawakened Sri Lankan hopes of reaching the finals - and left England perplexed by their persistent failings with the bat. Whereas Jayasuriya, who was at his dynamic best, upper-cutting and scoring freely through square leg, was supported by those lower down the order, England were again negligent after the parting of their two opening batsmen. Trescothick and Knight set off at a gallop as they chased 285, and their opening partnership of 115 in 20 overs suggested a remarkable win. But once Trescothick had been run out, England deflated. De Silva's four wickets punctured England's resolve, Muralitharan collected his 300th wicket at this level, and Sri Lanka were left just two points behind, with a game in hand.
Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya.
