England v Pakistan

At Lord's, June 22

15-Apr-2004
At Lord's, June 22. England won by four wickets. Toss: England.
An emphatic flick for six by Trescothick sealed the series with nine balls to spare, but England's road to victory was littered with several accidents and near-misses. Chasing a below-par 230, they were progressing smoothly at 129 for two. But Troughton needlessly launched Shoaib Malik to long-off, and Mohammad Hafeez struck three times in three overs with his subtly varied offbreaks. With 76 still required, Read dug in at Trescothick's side, though both were lucky to come through a maniacal spell of extra-fast bowling from Shoaib Akhtar. Trescothick was dropped by Rashid Latif - high and bullet-like to his left - on 93, while Read somehow survived a convincing shout for leg-before, and was twice a whisker from being bowled. But Trescothick hung on to complete his fifth one-day international century - his third at Lord's - from 142 balls, and Read was still with him at the end. Pakistan had left themselves too much to do after their top order struggled in damp conditions against the thudding accuracy of Flintoff, whose first seven overs cost only nine. But Abdul Razzaq changed the complexion of the innings with a daring 64 from 53 balls. It was not quite enough.
