Cricket Australia pays tribute to the late George Thoms

Cricket Australia today extended its deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of former Australian Test batsman George Thoms, who passed away this morning, aged 76.

Cricket Australia today extended its deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of former Australian Test batsman George Thoms, who passed away this morning, aged 76.
Mr Thoms played one Test match for Australia, debuting alongside Richie Benaud in the fifth Test against the West Indies at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January, 1952.
He played 19 first-class matches, beginning his career at Melbourne University, before focussing his efforts on his profession as a doctor.
Cricket Australia Chairman Bob Merriman today extended his condolences to the Thoms family.
"George was a great man with a glorious sense of humour, who always gave his full support and effort to his university, club and national side," Mr Merriman said.
"He was an excellent all-round sportsman, not just on the cricketing field, but he ultimately chose to put his profession ahead of his cricketing career.
"George made a special effort to attend our Test cricketers' reunion in Sydney on July 11, and it was just fantastic to see him back among his peers.
"On behalf of Cricket Australia, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Thoms family."
