Cantonese course attracts budding umpires

The new year was ushered in with an Introduction to Cricket Umpiring Course in Cantonese.

The new year was ushered in with an Introduction to Cricket Umpiring in Cantonese Course held at Kowloon Cricket Cub on the morning of 5th January 2013. The course was presented by Mr. Adrian Lee using materials prepared by the ACU&S (HK, China) Training Officer Ian Thomson, who was also present to assist with more involved questions on the Laws and the HKCA rules.
Adrian did an excellent job of explaining the Laws of Cricket to the audience, imparting the subject matter with a sense of humour and using brief breakout sessions with training stumps to help understanding.
There were fourteen (14) attendees on the course including players from Craigengower CC Women's team, GLHS and Pioneers CC plus school teachers and other individuals wishing to learn more about the sport in their native tongue.
The course was conducted in spoken Cantonese with English presentation slides and covered through subjects such as Cricket Basics, Ways of Getting Out, the HKCA Rules for Saturday and Women's League and Umpiring Basics like where to stand on the field. The course included both classroom and on-field instruction.
We thank KCC for there support in hosting this event and the HKCA for assistance in putting it on.
A similar course with instruction in English is being planned for February 2013.
A number of course attendees are expected to attend the ACC Level 1 Umpires Course to be held at the Hong Kong Cricket Club over Chinese New Year 2013.
