Betty Chan grabbed five wickets as Hong Kong Women completed a 3-0 series whitewash over Japan Women at the Mission Road ground today.
For the first time in the series, Japan batted first but they struggled to come to grips with the Mission Road wicket and the medium pace bowling of Betty Chan. The Japanese batters found runs hard to come by with Miki Nakayama's 27 being the top score before she was run out. Extras came next with 21 and only two other batters registered double-figure scores. The innings lasted 45 overs.
Betty Chan bowled wicket to wicket, applying the adage of "You miss; I hit". And hit she did, with four of her five victims cleaned bowled while the last, to wrap up the innings, was caught and bowled. Chan's final analysis was 10-1-20-5.
Hong Kong appeared to have an easy target for victory but without the services of Neisha Pratt and Connie Wong, the batting responsibilities passed to players more used to batting lower down the order. Betty Chan opened the innings with Emma Phillips and together the two laid the foundation for Hong Kong's victory. Phillips was eventually bowled for a well hit 18 while Betty Chan was run out for 17. Keenu Gill provided the best batting of the day, reaching 34 before she became Hong Kong's second run out victim of the innings. By that stage Hong Kong were on the verge of securing their third win of the series but a flurry of wickets set the pulse rates sky rocketing. In the end, the victory was achieved in the 42nd over for the loss of six wickets.
Not surprisingly, Betty Chan was named Player of the Match.
