Darren Berry, the Victoria assistant coach, could be suspended after an alleged outburst at the third umpire during Victoria's limited-overs loss to Queensland at the Gabba on Friday. Berry was unhappy with the decision to adjudge David Hussey run out during Victoria's chase, as replays struggled to pinpoint the exact moment the bails were dislodged.
Berry visited the third umpire, Norm McNamara, while play was still in progress to seek clarification on the decision and at a hearing after the match he pleaded guilty to swearing and slamming a door as he left. However, Berry was also charged with showing serious dissent at the umpire's decision and attempting to intimidate the umpire.
The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday, when Berry's penalty will be handed down. "When passion and common sense clash, sadly on this occasion I chose the wrong option. I'm embarrassed and remorseful," Berry told the Herald Sun on Sunday.
Victoria went on to lose the match by 50 runs following Hussey's dismissal for 5. Berry, a former wicketkeeper and captain of the state, is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Bushrangers.
