Australia v Sri Lanka

At Sydney, January 13 (day/night)

15-Apr-2000
At Sydney, January 13 (day/night). Australia won by eight wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Jayasuriya fired the first shots in a battle of the buccaneers, with 65 from 62 balls, but in reply Gilchrist torpedoed a modest attack. He hit 131 in 118 balls, his fourth century in 12 months and - for three weeks - Australia's fourth-highest score at this level. He and Waugh opened with 151, Waugh's 63 from 76 balls looking almost sedate as Gilchrist dashed to 50 in a mere 37. Australia's winning total was 260 for two, the best batting second in a Sydney international. Muralitharan was again heckled by the crowd, with taunts of no-ball. The Australian left-arm spinner Young played no part after damaging his ankle as he skidded into an advertising board.
Man of the Match: A. C. Gilchrist. Attendance: 35,134.
