Australia v England

15-Apr-2004

At Melbourne, December 15, 2002 (day/night). Australia won by 89 runs. Australia 6 pts. Toss: Australia. One-day international debut: J. M. Anderson.
The image of a distraught Shane Warne leaving on a stretcher overshadowed another imperious Australian performance. Diving to try and save a single off his own bowling, he had dislocated his right shoulder. Within an hour, Warne was being checked by the surgeon who had operated on the same joint in 1998; scans confirmed ligament damage, which put his World Cup place in jeopardy, but Warne would be back before this tournament was over. Earlier, Gilchrist and Ponting had blazed 225 together, an Australian second-wicket record. An unfamiliar England attack included 20-yearold James Anderson, who had played only three one-day games for Lancashire. Preferred to Caddick, he bowled more tidily than his figures suggested. In reply, three slick run-outs undid Knight's fluent work, and Australia's second-highest one-day total in Melbourne was well beyond England.
Man of the Match: A. C. Gilchrist.
