Australia v Bangladesh, Canterbury

Australia v Bangladesh, Canterbury, NatWest Series 2005

15-Apr-2006
At Canterbury, June 30. Australia won by six wickets. Australia 5 pts, Bangladesh 1 pt. Toss: Australia.
Australia's victory was not as easy as it should have been. Having had the Tigers by the tail at 75 for five, they allowed them to get to 250, frustrated by Shahriar Nafees and Khaled Mashud, who added 94 together. After the customary flurry of loose shots from the top order, 19-year-old lefthander Shahriar anchored the innings in mature fashion, earning a maiden half-century plus the match award in his fourth international. Mashud reached a career-best 71 as the last two overs yielded 24. Gilchrist gave Australia a rapid start before his personal "walking" campaign took on a new dimension: he gave himself out caught at slip after a delivery from Tapash Baisya jagged out of the footholds, missing his bat by a distance. It was a graphic example of why so many Australian batsmen, Bradman included, have been content to leave decisions to the umpires. But fifties from Clarke and Ponting saw Australia home. It was Bangladesh's 100th defeat in 112 one-day internationals.
Man of the Match: Shahriar Nafees.
