  • It was the 1501st Test in cricket history.
  • It was Pakistan's 269th and Sri Lanka's 101st Test.
  • It was 26th Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The record now reads: Pakistan 13, Sri Lanka 5 and drawn 9.
  • It was the 9th Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Sri Lankan soil. The record now reads : Pakistan 5, Sri Lanka 1, drawn 3.
  • Former Sri Lankan player Asoka de Silva was officiating for the first time in a Test match. He became the 15th Sri Lankan to stand in a Test match as an umpire. The other umpire Russell Tiffin was officiating in his 16th Test.
  • Abdur Razzaq became second Pakistani and 24th bowler in Test annals to achieve a Test match hat-trick when he had Romesh Kaluwitharana, Rangana Herath and Ravindra Pushpakumara dismissed off fourth, fifth and sixth ball of his 11th over. Razzaq also provided the 27th instance when a hat-trick has been recorded in Test cricket. The list includes nine Englishmen, seven Australians, three West Indians, two Pakistanis, a South African, a New Zealander and a Sri Lankan. No hat-trick has yet been recorded for India and Zimbabwe.
  • At 20 years 202 days Razzaq became the youngest bowler to claim a Test hat-trick. The previous record was on the name of Springbok Geoff Griffin who was 21 years 12 days old when he achieved his hat-trick against England at Lord's in 1960.
  • Saeed Anwar scored his 10th Test hundred in his 48th Test. He became the tenth Pakistani batsman to score 10 hundreds in a Test career.
  • Pakistan's total (600-8d) is its highest against Sri Lanka - home or away. This obliterates the previous highest of 594 made at Dhaka in the final of the Asian Test Championship in March 1999.
  • The total is also the highest by any side against Sri Lanka on Sri Lankan soil. The previous highest was 537 for 8 (decl) by India at Colombo Premadasa in 1996-97.
  • The previous highest for Pakistan on Sri Lankan soil was 390 at Colombo PSS in 1994-95.
  • Four batsmen (Saeed Anwar, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan and Wasim Akram) scored hundreds in Pakistan's only innings. This provided only the sixth instance of four batsmen scoring hundreds in an innings. The record, however, is held by Australia, whose five batsmen scored hundreds against West Indies at Kingston in 1954- 55.
  • Wasim Akram scored his third century in his 97th Test. His century came at batting position eight. Wasim has now scored two centuries at this position. Wasim became fourth batsman to score two centuries at batting position eight after New Zealand's Bruce Taylor, South Africa's Eric Dalton and India's Kapil Dev. Overall it was 41st instance of a batsman scoring century at number 8. Incidentally Akram also holds the world record of playing highest individual innings at number 8. He made 257* against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura in 1996-97.
  • Akram's innings is the highest by any batsman against Sri Lanka at number 8. The previous record was held by Akram himself who made 78 in the first Test of this series at Colombo SSC and by India's Kapil Dev who made 78 at Colombo PSS in 1985-86.
  • Akram's century came off just 86 balls, which is the second fastest for Pakistan after Majid Khan's 74 ball century against New Zealand at Karachi in 1976-77.
  • Akram's century is also the second fastest by any batsman against Sri Lanka after Kapil Dev's 74 ball century for India at Kanpur in 1986-87.
  • Pakistan gained first innings lead of 419 runs, which is the second highest for Pakistan in Test cricket. The highest still remains 476 runs lead against England at The Oval in 1987. Pakistan had made 708 in its first innings on that occasion and then bowled out England for paltry 232.
  • The seventh wicket stand of 120 runs between Younis Khan and Wasim Akram is a new record for this wicket for Pakistan against Sri Lanka obliterating the previous record stand of 104 runs between Haroon Rashid and Tahir Naqqash at Karachi in 1981- 82.
  • Muttiah Muralitharan has now conceded 100 or more runs in an innings on 26 occasion on his bowling. He thus surpassed India's Kapil Dev's tally of 25 such instances. Now only England's Ian Botham with 31 such instances is ahead of Muralitharan. Following table lists the bowlers with most instances of conceding 100 or more runs in an innings on their bowling :
  • Instances Bowler Country
31 Ian Botham England 26 Muttiah Muralitharan Sri Lanka 25 Kapil Dev India 24 Abdul Qadir Pakistan 20 Richard Hadlee New Zealand 20 Imran Khan Pakistan 20 Bhagwat Chandrasekhar India
  • Rangana Herath bagged a pair in the Test. He became tenth Sri Lankan (on 12th occasion) to suffer this fate. He also became the fifth Sri Lankan after Arjuna Ranatunga, Don Anurasiri, Chamara Dunusinghe and Pramodya Wicremasinghe (twice) to do so against Pakistan.
  • The innings win was Pakistan's sixth against Sri Lanka. It was the second largest win for Pakistan against Sri Lanka. The largest win for Pakistan against Sri Lanka came at Dhaka by an innings and 175 runs.
