A talented slow left-arm spinner, Pushpakumara forced his way into the Sri Lanka Under-19 side for the triangular tournament also involving England and Bangladesh in December 2005. He produced solid performances with the ball, with his best effort being a decisive 4 for 39 against Bangladesh. He is also a capable lower-order batsman.
