Marais Erasmus, a South African umpire, has been promoted to the ICC's International Panel of umpires. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced its panels of umpires and match referees for the 2008-09 season.
Erasmus officiated during the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in February and made his umpiring debut in one-day internationals when Kenya played Canada in Nairobi in October 2007. He also stood in the Twenty20 international between South Africa and Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Erasmus will join Brian Jerling on the ICC International Panel while Ian Howell is an ICC International TV Umpire. Rudi Koertzen is the only South African on the Elite Panel of umpires.
"We are delighted with the progress our umpires are making in world cricket," CSA manager of operations, Mike Gajjar said. "In retaining the same panels we feel that transfer of skills initiative put in place last season will sustain us for the future, this is an ongoing process and will continue.
"The overall performance of the umpires was of a very high standard during the past season thus enabling the players to enjoy the game."
The 12-member national first-class and the 14-member emerging panels remained unchanged from last season. The six Match Referees also remained the same.
