UCBSA Press Release
13-Feb-2003
Jonty Rhodes has been withdrawn from the South African World Cup squad due
to the hand injury he sustained in Wednesdays 10 wickets win over Kenya in
Potchefstroom.
Rhodes suffered a break to the fifth metacarpal on his right hand when he
dropped catch offered by Maurice Odumbe in the 31st over of the Kenyan
innings.
The fracture was reduced under local anesthetic and two pins were inserted
to facilitate union at the fracture site by immobilisation.
Medical opinion is that the injury could take up to four weeks to heal with
another week needed for rehabilitation.
In the light of this information and after consultation with fellow
selectors, coach Eric Simons, captain Shaun Pollock and the medical team,
selection convener Omar Henry has decided to withdraw Rhodes from the squad.
The South African team management will submit and application together with
the relevant medical documents on Friday morning to the ICC CWC Technical
Committee for approval to have Western Province batsman Graeme Smith drafted
into the squad as a replacement for Rhodes.
