Jono McLean is a South African born batsman who represented Western Province from 2001-02 but has a British passport, which enabled him to sign a professional contract with Hampshire in 2004. That year he had a batting average of over 80 for Hampshire's 2nd XI, prompting Tim Tremlett, Hampshire's director of cricket, to say of his signing: "The ability he showed in the 2nd XI last season has persuaded Hampshire to invite this exciting player as part of our future plans." He is keen to emulate his Hampshire team mate Kevin Pietersen and play for his adopted country: "I have to complete my four years' residential status to be available to play for England, then who knows?". First and foremost McLean must concentrate on making an impact in an extremely competitive Hampshire top order, then, indeed, who knows?
