Dean Elgar is a left-handed batsman who will captain South Africa in the forthcoming 2006 Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka. Elgar was the South African Country Districts Player of the Year in 2005 after a series of impressive performances for Free State.
He has only played in five U19 ODI matches and is yet to play a first-class
match. He broke into the team at the start of the Afro-Asia Cup at the end
of 2005 and was appointed captain immediately. The South African selectors
expect great feats from this youngster in the future, and although South
Africa had a very disappointing Afro-Asian Cup the selectors have retained
their faith in his ability as both a captain and a mainstay of the
middle-order batting line-up. He will have to improve significantly on his
batting performances in the Afro-Asia Cup when he heads to Sri Lanka.
