Somerset have confirmed the services of their captain Marcus Trescothick for another three years after he signed a fresh deal with the county. The former England opener will have the option of extending it by another season, which means he could continue playing till 2013.
Trescothick, 34, has been prolific for Somerset since his debut in 1993, topping the Championship run charts in 2008 with 1817 runs, including eight centuries, at an average of 75.70. He had 318 runs from eight games In the Pro40, 476 runs at 59.50 in the 50-over Friends Provident Trophy and 323 runs in the Twenty20 Cup.
"I am absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract with Somerset," Trescothick told the club's official website. "My aim is to play for as long as I can, at least until I am 40 and beyond- if I am fit enough."
Brian Rose, Somerset's director of cricket, praised Trescothick's commitment to the club. "In cricket there is a lot more movement of players between counties than there was in my playing days, so it is a great sign that our best player is pledging his future to the club where he started," he said. "When he has been called upon to skipper the side in Justin Langer's absence in recent seasons he has done an excellent job - for instance like he did in the Pro40 against Gloucestershire at Bristol, when he led very much from the front."
Trescothick announced his retirement from international cricket in 2008 following a battle with a stress-related illness that kept him out of England's tours since 2006. It did not, however, affect his batting for Somerset.
