Former West Indies international Omari Banks has been released by Somerset after struggling to cement a place.

Banks had an unproductive time two-year stint with the county, featuring in just six Championship games for one half-century and seven wickets. Director of cricket Brian Rose said: "I have informed Omari that, regrettably, his contract hasn't been renewed. Really he has been outstanding in his personal application to his job over the two years. We haven't been able to fault his dedication. But he hasn't had the performances to justify another contract."

Banks, who played 10 Tests and five ODIs for West Indies between May 2003 and August 2005, joined Somerset as a Kolpak player for the 2008 season. He did not count as an overseas player as he was born in Anguilla, a British protectorate. Prior to joining Somerset he spent two months in the Leicestershire second team, with a solitary senior appearance against Pakistan.

During his time with Somerset, Banks was banned for 12 days and Somerset fined £500 after he was found guilty of ball tampering by an ECB disciplinary commission.

The legspinner Mike Munday has agreed a one-year deal with Somerset after initially being without a contract at Taunton. He played just one Championship game in 2009, taking four wickets in the win against Yorkshire at Headingley.

"He is coming back next year," said Rose. "We know he has the ability but he just needs to find the consistency."
