The injury is a disappointing setback for Swann, 28, who was recalled from the international wilderness by England's new coach Peter Moores, after an absence of seven-and-a-half years. He is expected to be out of action for two weeks.
Swann was one of the team's key performers in the first four matches of the series, taking seven wickets at 22.28 - including 4 for 34 in the third ODI, the best by an England spinner for four years - and chipping in with vital runs down the order, including scores of 34 and 25 in England's two victories at Dambulla.
With the series already in the bag, Swann's absence will not be too keenly felt, and should provide Monty Panesar with an opportunity to sample the Sri Lankan conditions ahead of the three-match Test series in December. Swann's next objective is to regain full fitness in time for the first Test at Kandy on December 1.
