Opening batsman Peter Ingram has won a recall to New Zealand's one-day side and will replace Jesse Ryder for the tri-series in Sri Lanka next month. Ingram, 31, benefitted from the unavailability of Aaron Redmond to gain a spot in the touring party following Ryder's withdrawal with an elbow injury.
Ingram will join the squad in Australia this week to prepare for the tournament. "We considered a few players but felt that an experienced opener was required so Ingram got the nod," the coach and selector Mark Greatbatch said.
"Aaron Redmond was in contention but was unavailable due to his wedding overseas and that opened the door for Ingram. Ingram played in our last ODI series against Australia at home and we were looking for top-order cover so he was the natural choice."
Ingram was dropped after struggling against Australia in March, but now has a chance to add to his six ODIs. After breaking into the squad earlier this year, he has also played two Tests and three Twenty20s, with an international best of 69 on one-day debut against Bangladesh in February. New Zealand's first game of the tri-series is against India in Dambulla on August 10.
