Scorecard
After a low-scoring Intercontinental Cup match a few days ago in Aberdeen, the runs flowed in the first one-day international between Scotland and Canada at Mannofield Park with the visitors clinching the high-scoring contest with six wickets in hand. Gavin Hamilton and Fraser Watts scored hundreds for the hosts but their efforts were overshadowed by Canada's centurion, Sandeep Jyoti, and Ashish Bagai who pulled off the chase with eight balls to spare.
Scotland made an outstanding start after getting sent in to bat in the two-match series. Their openers, Watts and Hamilton, shared a 203-run stand for the first wicket. Watts scored 101 off 109 balls - his maiden ODI century - with six fours and two sixes and was dismissed only in the 40th over. Hamilton, however, carried on converting his second one-day century into his highest score and finished with 119.
The rest of the Scotland batsmen only needed to chip in and they did to set Canada a formidable total of 286 for 4.
Canada's chase began poorly as their opener Ashif Mulla was lbw to Jan Stander in the first over with only four runs on the board. Jyoti and Rizwan Cheema put the chase on course with an 83-run association for the second wicket before the Canada innings received two jolts in quick succession. Cheema was caught off Stuart Chalmers for 47 off 38 balls after which Zubin Surkari was trapped leg before by Gordon Drummond for 1, leaving the visitors on 89 for 3.
Their run-rate at the time, though, was over six an over and the momentum was maintained by Bagai, who joined Jyoti in a match-winning partnership. They added 146 for the fourth wicket, Joyti achieving a career best of 117 before he was dismissed in the 43rd over, with Canada needing 52 off 45 balls. Bagai, however, stayed firm and completed the chase, remaining unbeaten on 92 when the target was reached in the penultimate over.
