A powerful middle-order batsman, Watson carries a lot of expectation with him when he walks to the middle - not least after being appointed Scotland captain in April 2007. He was born in Zimbabwe, and claims to support South Africa, but has been a key figure in Scotland's impressive strides over recent years. He struck 80 against Pakistan on his ODI debut in 2006 and hammered his first century against Canada during the ICC Tri-series in Mombasa in early 2007. His medium-pace is a useful addition. He stepped in as skipper when Craig Wright left the World Cup for personal reasons and was officially appointed captain when Wright announced his departure after Scotland's early exit from the 2007 World Cup. Watson was retained as captain for Scotland's Twenty20 World Championship squad in September.
Andrew McGlashan August 2007
