Makhaya Ntini has become the 21st bowler, and third South African, to reach 300 Test wickets after removing Mohammad Sami on the second morning at Port Elizabeth. He joins Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald as men from South Africa to reach the coveted landmark.
Ntini was poised on 299 wickets after claiming four on the first afternoon and didn't have to wait long to tick over into the next century. The dismissal encapsulated his bowling; wide of the crease, nipping into the right-handed Sami, taking the inside edge and through to Mark Boucher. At first, it didn't appear Ntini was going to appeal but followed the keeper and slips in asking the question before peeling away in celebration.
He lifted his shirt to reveal a hand-written message underneath which read "Mdingi Express 300 wickets". It has taken Ntini just 19 Tests to move from 200 to 300 scalps, the milestone arriving in his 74th Test. That's the same number as it took his partner-in-crime, Shaun Pollock who brought up his triple century by having Michael Vaughan caught at slip at The Oval in 2003. South Africa lost that Test, Ntini will be hoping for a different result this time.
