Baroda takes first-innings lead against Haryana

Baroda took a 48-run first innings after routing Haryana for 127 runs at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. Munaf Patel started the rot by bowling Haryana captain Rahul Dewan for 15. Nitin Saini fell five overs later for 18 to leave Haryana 35 for 2. Things steadily became worse and when Munaf dismissed former India batsman Hemang Badani for 8, the score read 72 for 5. Dhruv Singh provided some late middle-order resistance, making 35, but left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt ran through the tail to knock Haryana over in just 42.2 overs. Munaf finished with 4 for 34, while Bhatt took 3 for 25. Baroda got a solid start from their openers, who added 56, but it was a whirlwind unbeaten 65 from Yusuf Pathan, who struck 6 fours and four sixes, that took Baroda past the hosts. Yusuf added 87 with Connor Williams (49*) from 17.3 overs as Baroda ended the day on 175 for 3.

Vinay Kumar and Sreenath Aravind combined to skittle Punjab for 237 and hand Karnataka the advantage after the first day at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. Put in to bat, Punjab slumped to 42 for 3, with Vinay Kumar taking two wickets in two balls. Uday Kaul and Yuvraj Singh then came together to add 84, before Yuvraj flashed at an outswinger from Aravind, to be caught behind for 39. Kaul continued to offer resistance, but fell to Aravind six short of what would have been a well-deserved century. Kumar picked up two more wickets to end with figures of 5 for 61, while Aravind took 4 for 63.

Led by Eklavya Dwivedi's meticulous half-century, Uttar Pradesh crawled to 174 for 4 against Orissa at the Dr Akhilesh Das Stadium in Lucknow. Dwivedi and Mohammad Kaif put on 113 for the third wicket after UP had lost both their openers for 28. The partnership was broken when Alok Sahoo had Kaif lbw for 51 from 160 deliveries, with six fours. Dwivedi finally fell in the second-last over of the day, also to Sahoo, having batted for five and three-quarter hours and faced 250 balls for his 83.

Ajinkya Rahane began his 2010-11 Ranji Trophy campaign with yet another century, but Wasim Jaffer missed out on a third successive hundred, as Mumbai piled up 287 for 4 on the first day against Bengal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Rahane, who missed Mumbai's opening game against Saurashtra, made 110, his 15th first-class hundred, and added 142 with captain Jaffer for the third wicket. Both men were ultimately dismissed by Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary's part-time medium-pace, giving him career-best figures of 2 for 23. Rahane was the first to go, caught in the slips, and two overs later Jaffer chased a wide one and edged behind for 73. Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Nayar played out the rest of the day, with Sharma looking in good form while making 37 from 48 balls, with seven fours.

Assam found themselves in trouble at 174 for 7 against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi, with one-time India spinner Murali Kartik taking four wickets. Having chosen to bat, Assam were quickly in trouble at 15 for 2. Captain Amol Muzumdar and Sridharan Sriram then put on 54 before Kartik got in the act by having Sriram caught for 31. Muzumdar was the next to go, falling to the legspin of Marripuri Suresh, having made a painstaking 44 from 132 deliveries. After Deepak Sharma's dismissal for 21, leg before to Kartik, Tarjinder Singh and Kunal Saika took Assam to 161 for 5. Kartik then took two late wickets to leave the visitors in a deep hole. Tarjinder was on 34 at stumps, with Arlen Konwar for company.

Virat Kohli made it back-to-back hundreds as Delhi racked up 258 for 3 against Tamil Nadu at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Delhi had just lost two quick wickets after the openers had added 53 when captain Mithun Manhas joined Kohli at the crease. The pair then proceeded to make the home bowlers toil, adding 190 for the third wicket to put Delhi in a strong position going into the second day. Manhas eventually fell for 70, having hit four fours and two sixes in his 140-ball knock. Rajat Bhatia (1) was forced to retire hurt but Kohli was still there at stumps having made 119 to go with the 173 he made in the first game against Bengal.

The opening day in the game between Gujarat and Saurashtra at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat was called off because of rain.
