An injury-hit New Zealand have handed a maiden international call-up to Northern Districts opener BJ Watling and comebacks to Scott Styris and Tim Southee. The trio got a look-in for the limited-overs fixtures against Pakistan in the UAE to make up for the absence of Jesse Ryder, Grant Elliott and Daryl Tuffey, who sustained injuries during the Champions Trophy. Nathan McCullum, dropped for the Champions Trophy, has been recalled in place of Jeetan Patel.

South African-born Watling, 24, has been a solid performer for ND this past domestic season, averaging 63.62 in the one-day competition. He was awarded a winter contract last year in a deal that ran from May to September and covered the Emerging Players Tournament in Queensland and the New Zealand A tour of India. He made 94 and 115 not out in Australia and 97 in India. With New Zealand dropping back-up wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins, Watling will serve as understudy to Brendon McCullum.

Southee and Styris last played ODIs at home against India in March. Aaron Redmond, who was flown in to South Africa as Ryder's replacement, has been retained.

Daniel Vettori, after his first decision-making stint as a selector, said the choices had been tough despite the number of injuries. "This tour is a good opportunity for Watling to get a taste of top-level cricket - as selectors we believe he's got strong potential as a top-order batsman. Aaron made a strong case for his inclusion with confident performances at the World Twenty20 and Champions Trophy.

"Nathan and Tim will give us flexibility and options, which will suit the short, sharp nature of this tour - but Jeetan Patel and Iain O'Brien are continuing to push hard for places in the squad. Coming off a great performance in the Champions Trophy there's a confidence in the squad that we can do well in this series on neutral ground."

New Zealand will depart for Dubai on October 27. After three ODIs and two Twenty20s, they will host Pakistan for three Tests. Ryder (abdominal strain), Elliott (broken right thumb) and Tuffey (broken right hand) will be reassessed prior to that series. Vettori, who missed the final of the Champions Trophy, and Jacob Oram, who announced his retirement from Tests this week, remain subject to fitness assessments on their hamstrings.

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (capt), Shane Bond, Neil Broom, Ian Butler, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Aaron Redmond, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling.

Its good to see southee back into the team as new zealand needs to develop young bowlers like him for the future as thier fromtline bowling attack all seem to be aged 30+. Also good to see young players like watling givin thier chance as oposed to persisting with incumbent players who are under performing

good 2 see styris back. they need peter Mcglashan back he played good against india. need 2 drop oram though. Broom has 2 bat at 3-5 not a slogger down the order. watling in the team is good. Nathan McCullum is a good selection like 2 see him in the test team aswell.franklin should be in the team as abatter who can bowl a bit. good team though.

Century Kid - I'm happy that they are giving Williamson more time to develop physically and as a cricketer... it's true that 'if you are good enough you are old enough' but NZ has a sad history of deep-ending talented young players too early and losing them too early. Better a career from age 23 until 36 or 37 than from 19 to 28. Remember Ken Rutherford!

Nz pick a good squad but I still think they are way behind from Pakistan in the CT luck favoured them some umpiring decisions have gone their way simply it was not Pakistan's day but every day is not sunday. To beat Pakistan a ODI series and specially away from Nz they have to play realy well and play well is not enough they need some luck as well as they get in the CT semi and Pakistan has to play bad then the only case nz can beat Pakistan. Pakistan has beaten by Nz in the semi so they are waiting for the series to level things this time.

Squad looks alright, we're in with a good chance here........very happy to see Scott Styris is back in there, he's been one of our best ODI players for a number of years now and deserves to be in the team, he's played 150+ ODIs and he's another bowling option too. He's been treated pretty badly by the selectors, you don't throw away someone with that sort of experience. I can't believe Diamanti & Broom were considered better options than Styris.

good to see the backs of Hopkins and Diamanti (if only a stroke of luck that Diamanti is injured), hopefully Broom either gets some runs or is dropped soon too. Good to see Scotty 'the Virus' Styris return to the fold, and Nathan McCullum who is a better one-day and 20/20 player than Patel. Not too worried about Redmond as I'm not sure if anyone better is floating around to open the innings. I never understood what '2-metre Peter' Fulton did to get axed - particularly considering how poor a prospect Broom is.

A pretty good side there. But I still have no idea why Styris is not in the first pick eleven? This is the man who showed us in the last World Cup that he is an exceptional player, and I don't remember him making too many mistakes after the Cup, at least none of them were enough to have him dropped. Is it only me, or does a batting order consisting of Ryder (when fit), McCullum, Guptill, Taylor, Styris, Oram/Elliott seem so much more solid? He just adds something more, and its a pretty unsafe feeling when you replace his name with 'Broom' in that line up.

not a big difference between dis team and CT team. only forced changes have been mad. a good contst will be worth watching if kiwis get setteled early in hot conditions in UAE. it wil be a hard one for their bowlers too, on batting friendly conditions but mills bond and denienl are quite capable to do it, they hav shown in recently concluded CT dat they are no more afraid of Pakistan now. Well lets c wat they can do.

I wish they would give Kane Williamson a chance instead of Redmond or Watling. This kid is the futre for NZ so the earlier he is exposed to international level the better.
