The door has not been shut on Younis Khan returning to the Pakistan captaincy after he takes some time out from the game to, in his own words, "get himself together." Younis walked away from the post on Wednesday, wanting to take a rest and skip the New Zealand series after saying he had "lost command" over his team.

Though his future plans are currently unclear, Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman who just weeks ago said Younis would remain captain - provided he is selected and fit - till the 2011 World Cup, insists that he remains an option to lead Pakistan, possibly on the tour to Australia, once he has returned.

"We have a long-term plan in place," Butt told Cricinfo, "and we will review that once we get together over the next few days to discuss this. Younis wanted a rest and we have given him that. But when he comes back we will most definitely consider him as an option for captaincy."

Cricinfo understands that, as the situation currently stands, Younis is unlikely to come back as captain. Implicit in his comments over the decision was the acknowledgement that he had not been able to overcome differences with a group of senior players in the team unhappy with his leadership. Sources close to Younis say that he does not want to continue leading in the current environment where players are actively trying to undermine him.

Butt, however, played down the matter, denying that Younis had, in effect, stepped down in the face of a players' revolt. "I don't believe in that at all. Every time we lose a match or a series, this kind of speculation comes out and there is nothing like that in it. Younis wanted a rest and we have given that to him."

Pakistan will now travel to New Zealand for a three-Test series with Mohammad Yousuf in charge - their third captain of the year and fourth if you count Shahid Afridi as the Twenty20 captain - and Kamran Akmal as his deputy. Yousuf has captained Pakistan in three Tests previously, though each time was as stand-in for Inzamam-ul-Haq. Yousuf was in the running for the captaincy after Inzamam's retirement in 2007, though he was overlooked as Shoaib Malik took over.

Reportedly unhappy over the move, Yousuf had a public falling out with Malik, joining the ICL in 2008 - after turning his back on them in 2007 - in protest and singling out Malik and the selection committee as the sole reasons for doing so. Incidentally, Malik is widely believed to be one of the main men unhappy with Younis' leadership and the speculation in Pakistan is that he is making a move for the post himself. But there was apparently little disagreement among the Pakistan think-tank over the choice of Yousuf as an alternative to Younis.

"We consulted the options among ourselves and we came to the conclusion that Yousuf is the ideal alternative," Butt said. "There were no disagreements over the choice and we are confident he can do the job."

Yea dude you are right thats why while playing for IPL he spent most of his time on sideline.I doubt very much that India would even consider him for the 12 th man.As an emotional and tempramental person, he has respect for none not even for his superiors. He demonstrated it while dealing with ex PCB chairman Sharyar Khan when haphazardly he called a press confrence, and even could not justify his point. A true leader encounters the problems bravely, sorts them out and never tries to find an escape or excuse. If he was a true leader, he had the best opportunity to root out the evils and black sheeps , but of course he lacks the balls. He compares himsef with Imran and claims himself a khan but certainly is a differnt Khan than the GREAT Imran Khan. I agree with you that he is a funny man thats why you recommended him to play for India.Certainly you are not less funny than him.So please stop accusing other players especially Afridi who is a true fighter and had provet it again and again.

First of all i think Afridi is a main problem for Pakistan. He is the most unresponsible, unreliable batsmen in world. He should only play t20s. And he really plays dirty politics with younis khan. Younis khan is a simple men. He is very serious in cricket, not like other players, therefore he is the best batsmen ever in Pakistans team. And he cant handle the whole shit team, who are bunch of fraudiers. I think younis should stop playing for pakistan, cuz everyone is against him besides the youngsters. He should play domestic and try to play for India by changing passport. Cuz there he will be respected as a very very good batsmen like he is. I dont have faith in Pakistan anymore. And I dont get why Younis said he gets support of every pakistani. He doesnt get support. He is just funny men.

Yonis khan is the worst player in the team. There is no place for him in the one day team at all. You can imagine how poor as a batsman he is when you see his average for the last year i.e. 14. Average of 14 is even worst than some bowlers' batting average. Younis should not be given captaincy in the tour against Australia. He does not deserve it at all. He maybe given place in the test side but he should definitely be kicked out of Pakistan's one day team forever. In my view he is the worst oneday batsman and captain.

Our main problem as a nation has always been acknowledging our heroes in a way they truly deserve, i personally thinks these cricketers have a big heart when it comes to face this criticism. Younis Khan is one of the few players in Pakistani team who have always given it his best anyday sometimes as a batsman, other times as fielder or a team member i think he deserves alot more than what we have offered to him here. Atleast we should admit that he has served well as a captain, nobody is perfect and that we must not forget. Name any player which people according to their whim wants to b captain .. im sure they wont or cant support him for long someday his performance would decline or Pakistan will lose some matches and they would start criticizing him again and thats not fair ... i wish we dun only salute the rising sun always but acknowledge what a person has done as an individual within his grasps. Younis khan for me is great player for Pakistan. All d best to him and PAKISTAN.

yea, go ahead, make someone else the captain. Soon players will be unhappy with him too! everyone wants to be a captain. I am sure Imran Nazir and Sohail Tanvir are among them.

In Pakistan team, there is always grouping in the team. But , Younis should not left like this. He is only capable player that lead the team. Afridi has no talent to lead 50 overs game. He has no patience and thinking behind decisions. The biggest trouble maker player in current Pakistan team is Shoaib Malik. He made all these grouping because of lost is captaincy. He has no talent to be in test cricket and one day team. If you looked his performance in critical games, He always throw his wicket such as Champions trophy semi final , 3 one day in recent series. Kamaran Akmal is god player but he is also following his grouping. Get new guys and rid of Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt and Imran Farhat

Everyone was laughing when a few days an article came on Younas and he said every Pakistani person backed him to return as a captain. LOL - Joke of the YEAR - I reckon he should join Stage Dramas instead of Cricket.

I think yunis khan not quite because of player, actually his performace is not very good even as a player. So he must have to prove first that he is deserving to play in pakistani cricket team.It is shame for team whose captain is like yunis khan. I hope yunis khan first play cricket now at domestic level, then if he perform good there ,then he should be selscted as normal player in pakistani cricket team.It will be better for him as well as for pakistan.

i think pakistan cricket needs to select a brand new team as like west indies , and ak its senior player to sort out differences, then come back fresh for the mega sport.since after inzama's captaincy none of the senior players are willing to co operate the other player incharge as captain. Mr Butt ,the chairman needs to take firm step to stop this type of thinks , rather than dening the fact.

I agree with Karamat. There is strong grouping in the team which are not backing Younis. Our board has no power to ask question from player. There are too many players in the waiting list. I suggest to get this group out of team and bring the new blood. This Afridi is the leader of this grouping in the team. He is not backing Younis, see how he is talking about to motivate team players etc. Shame on you afridi... There was time ( i would say number of years) when you were not perform and still in team. One more thing that in Pakistan team there is PARCHI system. Second Butt (salman) of PCB is also big PARCHI of first Butt (Ijaz)
