Mohammad Yousuf has been appointed Pakistan captain for the Test tour of New Zealand later this month with Kamran Akmal as his deputy. The appointment came after Younis Khan sought a break from cricket following the ODI series defeat to New Zealand in Abu Dhabi, Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said.
"I have taken this decision after giving it serious thought," Younis told AFP. "Since I am not in the best of form, I need rest and there is no personal grudge against anyone, that's for sure. I want to tell my fans that I am not finished, I will come back. My country comes first, more than my family and more than myself."
Butt said he had no objection to Younis seeking a break. "We did appoint Younis captain until the 2011 World Cup, subject to his performance and fitness, but we have no objection to him asking for a rest, and I don't think it's a turmoil in Pakistan cricket," he said.
Pakistan's 2-1 loss, after winning the first game, sparked criticism of Younis' captaincy and media reports suggested he had lost the confidence of his players. The teams play two Twenty20 internationals on Thursday and Friday and Pakistan leave for New Zealand on Sunday.
Yousuf's appointment marks a full comeback for the batsman, who only recently was in exile from the national team for his involvement with the ICL. More importantly, it is the latest development in a period of uncertainty over the Pakistan captaincy that began after their semi-final defeat to New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy..
Younis resigned as captain following that loss and it was believed that suspicions of match-fixing raised in the aftermath of Pakistan's Champions Trophy semi-final exit, and murmurs about factions in the team and management working to undermine Younis, led to the decision.
The PCB, however, rejected his resignation and Butt had a meeting with Younis, where Younis said he would return only if certain conditions were met. Stability of tenure was one, though those close to Younis insist he didn't want an assurance till the 2011 World Cup. A streamlining of the selection process, as well as changes in the team management were thought to be the other conditions. Younis then took back his resignation and said that he was happy to return as captain following the wave of support he received.

Younis Khan is certainly the best choice as captain, and given the fact that he led Pakistan to their first big tournament victory in a long time at the ICC World T20 is evidence enough. However, poor form, that could be related to all the stress that he has undergone to keep the team united, and in the wake of some unexpected defeats to Newzealand that started at the Champions Trophy, has raised some unwanted questions over his credibility as captain. In my opinion, it would be better to reduce the pressure on Younis by appointing Shahid Afridi as one-day captain and allow Younis some breathing space to allow him to get his batting form back. Its better also that he sits out of the current NZ tour and take a break. Yousuf is reliable as captain in my view and can be trusted to lead Pakistan in his absence. It would also be good for the team that Shahid Afridi was at least drafted in to the test squad if not included in the XI, as he is the best allrounder in the world (fact!).

Posted by pakispininblackman on (November 13 2009, 02:44 AM GMT)Well personally i think that Younis khan was a good captain. He was leading the team in the right direction, but you cant lead the people who are against you. If he had support he would have really showed what Pakistan is about! But I'm afraid that the Pakistan has players who look to get the best for themselves. Instead of playing for the country, they play for themselves. Instead of trying to support their team, they ditch them in the time of need! What will happen to a team like that, only God can say, but it wont be good! The solution is simple in words..... but an impossible task to accomplish, "Politics need to get out of Cricket!" Once that happens, things will be back to when Imran Khan ruled!
Posted by pakctlover on (November 12 2009, 06:25 AM GMT)Hopefully Pakistan cricket will be in safe hands change will be efective for our cricket we all should be hope full Younis Khan need some time to bring his poseation back he is fighter he will come back.
Posted by MatrixRealoded on (November 11 2009, 21:49 PM GMT)Great New, Younas shopuld regigned from Limited overs format, when Younas choose as a captain after first Resign I oops sorry (Whole nation) believe that he play a trick to nation emotions. For PCB, come to pakistani streets and conduct a survey about younas captaincy I bet PCB will get 95% votes against him and this is not the reaction of lost agianst NZ it had strat in T20 cup. In T20 afridi and Gull survived younas captaincy nor a younas, after T20 Lanka series proved that younas is not a good captain, then CT where pakistan lose by NZ his decision were the worst taken in the field and about dropped catch I balieve this is the part of cricket. Younas is a good man, as a nation we loved him but as a captain we hate him.
Posted by gottalovetheraindance on (November 11 2009, 19:51 PM GMT)you all too confused make west indies cricket board almost look sensible
Posted by firish on (November 11 2009, 17:29 PM GMT)Yousaf deserves the captaincy for a long time. Younis should not be dropped from the test team. Younis is a failure in the recent series. Pakistan won T20 WC due to afridi performance in the final two games and when afridi performs pakistan got a very strong chance of winning. Pakistan lost the test series in Srilanka even after performing or even dominating at some stage in every match. In the ODI series Pakistan able to make 3-2 after losing the series in the first three games. The alarm rings should be heard by the PCB, but they are an ignorant lot. They kept pushing their favourite player for captaincy. In the Champions Trophy Pakistan won against WI which is a minnow even Bangladesh could defeat them at that time, the real and only win is against India, which is due to Shoaib Malik and Yousaf Partnership. In the game against NZ in the semis, Younis led the team from the front to defeat, by not performing and even dropping a dolly at a crucial stage of match.
Posted by ayazali on (November 11 2009, 17:13 PM GMT)Come on People! Bad things happen to everyone, almost every great cricketer in the past went through the same situation as Younis is going through right now. There is no need to discourage the man, its just that he is out of the sorts. Nothing else.
Posted by umairhuda on (November 11 2009, 17:03 PM GMT)I think Younus has taken the right decission,, no doubt he is a good captain but he is not performing well and Mohammed Yousuf deserve to lead Pakistan. I wish all the best to Mohammed Yousuf and we will Younis Khan during test series,, I hope he will be back into form and into the team..
Posted by thejoker911 on (November 11 2009, 16:58 PM GMT)well i believe this is a blessing in disguise younis was not performing well and he did needed a break just to sort things out. Yousuf is a great batsman arguably one of the best pakistan has ever produced and since his comeback i had a feeling that he was kind of lost in the team and he was'nt given any importance and he was also dropped in some ODI due to reasons i just cannot comprehend. He is the only batsman in pakistan's batting line up that has played more than 100 matches and averages 40+. younis is really good test batsman but in ODI's his record is quite poor and there are many better players who can replace him. I think this decision will make yousuf feel more important and bring the best out of him. Younis still according 2 me should b captain for test matches and afridi should b captain for ODI and T20
