Pakistan's former captain, Imran Khan, a political opponent of the country's president, Pervez Musharraf, has been arrested after making his first public appearance since emergency rule was declared in the country.
According to witness reports, Imran was arrested after attending a rally at the University of Punjab in Lahore. Chaotic scenes broke out and he was detained for an hour by students from an Islamist group, Jamaat-e-Islami, who objected to his presence on campus.
Imran's spokesman, Saifullah Khan Niazi, said he was locked inside a building for an hour before being put in a van and driven to police officers at the campus gates.
A police spokesman later confirmed to the BBC that Imran had been arrested. He had previously spent 11 days in hiding in Lahore.
