PCB to take over women's cricket affairs in Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to take over the reins of women's cricket affairs that will now be controlled centrally. The decision was taken Saturday after the Scrutiny Committee of Javed Zaman (chairman), Ijaz Fakih and Ahmad Shehzad Farooq Rana submitted two volumes of their reports on Scrutiny of Women's Cricket Associations with findings and recommendations for implementation to the Chairman of the PCB Lt Gen Tauqir Zia.

The committee was constituted on July 1, 2002 by the PCB in pursuance of the order dated June 20, 2002 passed by the Lahore High Court. The committee was given the mandate to give findings and recommendations on which of the three women associations was genuine and how to regulate women's cricket in the country.

The PCB decided to setup women's provincial cricket associations and for the first year, the officer-bearers would be the nominees of the board. Elections for the provincial posts will be held in the year 2004. The PCB also agreed in principle to have women's member in the PCB General Body. However, the number of representations for women would be decided in due course of time.

It was also decided that the women's cricket provincial associations will follow the constitution of the PCB but will be given a copy of the rules and regulations, like the men's cricket associations. The PCB, in the backdrop of Saturday's decision, will also make necessary adjustments in its constitution.

In view of the women's World Cup in August, the PCB has decided to immediately inform the International Women's Cricket Council (IWCC) and International Cricket Council (ICC)of Saturday's decision. In addition to this, the PCB has decided to constitute a selection committee that will pick the girls for the tournament, appoint the captain and vice-captain, a manager-cum-coach and a lady physiotherapist.

Likewise, the PCB is also contemplating taking over the deaf and dumb, and blind cricket associations.

"It was a very difficult task and I must thank the entire scrutiny committee for their excellent and untiring work that would now streamline women's cricket," Lt Gen Tauqir Zia said.
