Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin has been named as Chris Gayle's deputy for the five ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals on the tour of New Zealand. Ramdin, who was not part of the team for the recent ODIs in Abu Dhabi, replaces Ramnaresh Sarwan as vice-captain. Sarwan has been named vice-captain for the upcoming two-Test series, a squad which includes Ramdin.

Besides Ramdin, fast bowler Fidel Edwards and allrounder Kieron Pollard make a return to the ODI side, with batsman Leon Johnson, fast bowler Kemar Roach and chinaman bowler Dave Mohammed left out from the team that was in Abu Dhabi.

Ramdin's appointment comes as a surprise. He had been dropped from West Indies' ODI squad for the tri-series in Canada in August and the postponed Champions Trophy. Since January 2007, Ramdin has averaged 14.11 with only one half-century from 33 ODIs.

He was also not part of the victorious Stanford Superstars squad at the Stanford 20/20 for 20; instead he steered Trinidad & Tobago to the US$280,000 prize in their clash with fellow domestic champions Middlesex. Ramdin, with 91 runs from three games, finished as the second highest run-getter in the Super Series.

"When I was asked to do the job I immediately said yes, I did not hesitate," Ramdin said. "We have a crucial series coming up and I aim to play a major role. This is an opportunity to be in a leadership position and I am hoping to lead by example. This has given me added confidence and I will be looking to improve my batting and keeping."

As in the Test squad, West Indies have named two keepers, with Carlton Baugh competing with Ramdin. Another Trinidad & Tobago player, Pollard, makes it to the team. Pollard scored 120 runs in two innings in the WICB Cup - the premier domestic one-day tournament - which T&T won, as well as taking nine wickets at 14.22. He made his ODI debut for West Indies in a World Cup match against South Africa last year but has since played only three more times, the last against Australia in June.

Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn will stay on after the Tests for the two Twenty20 internationals on December 26 and 28. The five-ODI series begins on December 31.

West Indies limited-overs squad: Xavier Marshall, Chris Gayle (capt), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Kieron Pollard, Shawn Findlay, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Carlton Baugh (wk), Fidel Edwards, Brendan Nash, Nikita Miller, Daren Powell, Jerome Taylor, Lionel Baker, Sulieman Benn (only for the Twenty20 internationals).

more evidence of no clear selection policy....

Bravo is set to return in the tour of England next year after his surgery. I would like to know what type of team was selected its rediculous. The inclusion of so many in experienced batsmen and bowlers. West indies should take tips from Australia and include maybe one or two players at a time not several. Moreover, they must be given enough time to improve not just droped after some poor performances. It is notable as you play more games you gain more experience and your batting and bowling statistics will improve as in the case of South African AB devielers. I would like to know why Darren Sammy was not left in the squad since he tries hard and thus his hard work would surely lead to success if it were for a few more games under his belt. Finally, i believe Ramdin is the best keeper west indies have at present even though he cant bat Carlton baugh also is unable to bat so his inclusion to the side is a relief following the nonsenses displayed by baugh behind the stumps.

ramdin was considered captaincy material earlier and in any case better than sarwan as a captain. the only thing is that he has to regain his batting form. west indies should consider playing him at the top of the order atleast in tests (at number 4 or 5) so that he has more time to play. what is surprising is the selection of baugh as second keeper. they should have recalled lendl simmons of trinidad who besides also doubling as wicket keeper has been in good form. the retention of brendon nash is surprising. he did not do well in abudhabi either with the ball or bat and has bowled only two overs on the first day of the tour match in new zealand. dwayne smith of barbados would have done as good as nash and perhaps fielded better. dropping of roach also is surprising because his replacement edwards is mostly erratic. as a fellow boarder said badree should have been included in place of miller or atleast dave mohammed retained.

Hopefully it will give him that confidence boost he's claiming to have because of this. He's the most competent keeper we have right now he just obviously needs to be consistent with his batting. Patrick Browne I would have picked for his batting but i'm not sure about the keeping. Also, where the hell is Dwayne Bravo? Is he injured or something? Also, his brother has shown a lot more promise than findlay, nash and a couple others.

I think the west Indies Board need to review alot of the decisions they make. Because the team they have selected is just crazy. But lets hope for the best for the betterment of West Indies Cricket.

what has xavier marshall, shawn findley, brendan nash, nikita miller and fidel edwards done in recent history to deserve a pick on the west indies 20/20 team? Why has not samuel badree, william perkins and dave mohammed not been included in the 20/20 side after their performances in stanford's tournament. also why do you carry a bowler like dave (tadpole) mohammed to abu dhabi not play him in a game even after you have already lost the series and now drop him from a side with no true spinner or match winner. where is andre fletcher?

I hope Ramdin does some justice to his batting skills this time around, Im sure he will shine all-round one day...

is West Indies joking?? Unless Ramdin becomes a better batsman, he is just a liability. How can u be vice-captain if for a new series u couldnt even make TEAMM for the previuos series?? Are they looking for an excuse to pick Ramdin?

well its a change for the team and a first for Ramdin, hope he will play the part, as Sarwan has been. I wish him all the best

What has Ramdin done to support the decision to name him vice captain or more importantly what has Sarwan done to be dropped as Vice captain? Ramdin is a good keeper and definately shows a lot of potential, but i dont think he needs more responsibility right now, what he needs is to establish himself as top cricketer and world class player.
