The Indian team management has withdrawn Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik from Friday's Masters Twenty20 match in Wellington because they would have played alongside Hamish Marshall, the former New Zealand batsman who featured in the unauthorised ICL last year.
Tendulkar was to turn out for the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association (NZCPA) while Karthik was to play for the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) Masters in a game billed as a curtain-raiser to the second Twenty20 between India and New Zealand later on Friday.
Marshall, who played for the Royal Bengal Tigers in the ICL, was part of the NZCPA squad.
The BCCI has shunned official contact with ICL players and last year, refused to let VVS Laxman appear for Nottinghamshire because the county had ICL players in its ranks. The Indian board banned players associated with the unsanctioned league from all forms of official cricket and barred them from using any of its facilities. The BCCI also used its influence within the ICC to ensure that other national boards banned ICL cricketers and officials alike.
Heath Mills, the New Zealand Players' Asscoiation chief, called the whole business "a bit silly" and said the BCCI had known of the team make-up beforehand. "When I learnt about the BCCI's decision from Justin Vaughan, the CEO of New Zealand Cricket, I went back and tried to find a solution by explaining that Hamish is no longer an ICL player and we want him to play [in the match]," Mills said. However an ICL official told Cricinfo that Marshall was still contracted to the league.
"I was hoping for a change in their position but I understand I would have to speak to the right people in Mumbai and so we had to run with their decision last night.
Mills claimed Marshall was no longer a contracted player with the ICL and said his omission from the match was never considered as an option. He further called for the ICC and BCCI to resolve the ICL issue, which he said was depriving the international game of big stars like Shane Bond.

Like little guys playing cricket where the guy owning the bat and ball trying to dictate terms. Being an indian supporter, I appreciate the NZ board standing up to its players. I wish Kapil Dev and co. bring the lawsuit soon and win against the BCCI to enable ICL players to play in the domestic league. I think they have a big majority of Indian support for their cause. BCCI is not Indian goverment, it is just another entity. The team selected by BCCI must be BCCI team not indian team,I think its to end up BCCI dictatorship ,absolutely good decision by newzeeland board Icc have to change there behavior against ICL.
Posted by kingofspain on (February 28 2009, 19:53 PM GMT)Typical yet disgraceful. NZ should pick Shane Bond for the tests and ODIs and if the BCCI doesn't like it, they can go home. Call their bluff.
Posted by MohitSood on (February 28 2009, 02:27 AM GMT)What a shame..... People from same fraternity are not able to play together. I feel pity for the Cricket Giant Sachin Tendulkar who is handled in such a manner. People sitting in BCCI has no self respect but Sachin do have and for that matter Karthik too. Why BCCI is scared of ICL? .... At least here Kapil bhaaji is happy.
Posted by SunilPotnis on (February 27 2009, 17:21 PM GMT)BCCI is nothing but a collection of dirty politicians whose sole intention is money and preventing others from prospering. They could have negotiated with ZEE about the broadcasting rights. It is hard to imagine ZEE cannot afford to pay & BCCI cannot allow some one to have broadcasting rights knowing the kind of profits they would have made in total. To me, any Cricket board ruled by politicians is very hopeless situation and India is the perfect example that politicians will not let go a slightest opportunity to make money. To an extent, I can understand a league such as ICL (as in case of Kerry Packer) is not recognized, but eliminating human contact with anyone who represented ICL is nothing but discrimination. According to me, India is very hypocrite country and ashamed in this case being an Indian. When politicians get involved, ethics/values have no place & the game of cricket becomes political battlefield. India Cricket Control board represents that valueless place in cricket.
Posted by ChilledBeer on (February 27 2009, 17:16 PM GMT)BCCI is such an embarrassment for Indian cricket. This is getting more and more ridiculous by the day. Its a shame that no one is talking against it. Why can't they address real issues like improving domestic cricket in India and sending the right players to the national team, instead of silly matters like this? Enough has been said about this. It's time for some major cricketing body to stomp its foot down on Lalit Modi.
Posted by ravida on (February 27 2009, 16:08 PM GMT)It really makes you wonder...the level to which a premier governign body can stoop to, to serve its child like interests. I wonder why no TV channel arranges a clear debate between a top BCCI official, a cricket expert, an ICL official, and an emcee. BCCI will have no answer/justification to a single question asked of it! Let them be embarrassed and humiliated on national TV. That alone can make them realize how stupid it is to compromise the interests of hundreds of other stakeholders simply for their childish demands. As for some people asking why Tendulkar didnt take a stand, well...isnt it obvious?? While it is right that had a current player of his stature taken a stand, the issue might have taken a different color from there...but u can easily see why he didnt. Firstly, on pure technical grounds, if his name is omitted from the team list at the behest of the BCCI, there is not much he can do. He is not going to convene a press conference to slam them!
Posted by ravida on (February 27 2009, 16:07 PM GMT)Secondly, it is clear how far the BCCI is willing to pursue their bloated ego! If they can go as far as debarring and maligning a national hero of Kapils stature, surely Tendulkar has reason to worry before he takes a stand on this. He still has cricket to play and bigger goals to achieve. Its not realistic to expect him to compromise all that simply to prove a point. I think its nt very hard to predict what Sachins (and indeed any other cricketers, worldwide) take on this standoff is likely to be. Still, one cant expect current Indian players to risk what they have to pursue an end that may nt (and probably will nt) materialize.
Posted by mautan on (February 27 2009, 15:53 PM GMT)This is the height of arrogance, childishness, pettiness etc etc. So are these ICL players criminals for earning their livlihood in a different way than BCCI would dictate? Was Hamish Marshall going to be compensated by BCCI if he was never picked by NZ 2 years back? Would BCCI look after Hamish Marshall's family if he did not play in ICL? ICL has togo to court on this..every now and then BCCI has people who are dictators, first it was Dalmiya and now Modi. Its sad that in todays world we have to tolerate this behaviour. IPL will always be successful, because the man on street does not care about ICL or its players or fairness. I am from India, but today I have started believing that India is not fit to rule the world of cricket or be a superpower. There has to a inbuilt sense of fairness in people and I am sorry to say Indians lack terribly in that area. Power and authority does not sit well on Indian shoulders.

Posted by Dino_de_Hero on (February 27 2009, 13:41 PM GMT)Before passing our judgements, its better we understand the war behind BCCI and ICL. When Zee was deprived of Broadcasting Rights of the cricket matches to be held in India, Zee Network took that personally. This is when they came up with the idea of ICL and recruited important members of Indian Cricket like Kapil Dev and others. This will make it tough for the BCCI to fight against their own people close to heart. Also Zee will get exclusive coverage of the event and make big time money. This is what is hurting BCCI. If each and every channel in the future going to follow the footsteps of Zee and start creating their own version of event to make money, it will defeat the vested interest of the governing body like BCCI. Also the players and administrator who join ICL dont understand why BCCI is against ICL and get lured by the money offered to them. BCCI is not against ICL players or admin. They are against Zee.
