Chappell-Hadlee Series, 2005-06 Rain disrupts naming of Australian side December 6, 2005
Wet weather has forced Australia to delay announcing their side for the second match of the Chappell-Hadlee Series at Wellington on Wednesday. Australia's practice session was held inside today and Ricky Ponting said the conditions would probably determine his bowling line-up. "With the weather the way it is at the moment and what it might be like tomorrow we're going to hold off on the team," Ponting told AAP. "If we happen to get any sort of game in tomorrow we might have to look at different make-ups and things to go in with, so we'll leave that until tomorrow morning." Australia won the first game by 147 runs on Saturday and have the choice of resting one of Brett Lee, Stuart Clark or Nathan Bracken if Mick Lewis is brought in. However, if an extra fast bowler is needed either Brad Hogg or Cameron White, the supersub from the first match, would probably miss out. Despite the first-match thrashing, New Zealand retained the same squad as at Auckland with Daniel Vettori again leading the side in Stephen Fleming's absence. Steve Bernard, the Australia team manager, is satisfied with the security measures to prevent disruptions similar to the ones that spoiled sections of the first match at Auckland. Bernard was part of a security meeting today with New Zealand Cricket representatives, the match officials, local police and the Westpac Stadium's security company. "We are satisfied that the issue is being taken seriously and that security arrangements are being reviewed," Bernard said. "A more comprehensive strategy has been put in place that we hope will prevent any repeat of the incidents that marred Saturday's game." One of the improvements to protect the players included the front three rows of seating being empty.
