State Championship, Round Seven

Orchard rescues Northern after early jitters

Cricinfo staff

March 18, 2006

Mark Orchard scored an unbeaten 82, rescuing Northern Districts after a top-order collapse to end the first day at 222 for 8 in their State Championship match against Otago at Dunedin. Following a delayed start due to overnight rain, Northern were in all sorts of trouble at 74 for 6, rocked by Brad Scott's inspired spell which yielded three wickets. Scott was on the verge of a hat-trick in his first over. Orchard led the revival with the lower order and shared a crucial stand of 78 with Peter McGlashan (34), the wicketkeeper. Nathan McCullum, with his offbreaks, struck back with two wickets in three balls, reducing Northern to 152 for 8 till Graeme Aldridge (44*) joined Orchard at the crease. The pair have so far added 70.

Michael Papps scored a patient 89 as Canterbury ended the first day of their State Championship match against Central Districts at 286 for 6 at Christchurch. Papps scored 13 boundaries in his innings, batting for over five hours and added 108 for the second wicket with Shanan Stewart (66). Chris Harris, the captain, remained unbeaten on 55 till the end. Brendon Diamanti and Lance Hamilton took two wickets each, with one apiece for Jacob Oram and Ewen Thompson. Canterbury will need a good performance here to improve their chances of making the knock-out phase.
