Phillips lays down one more challenge for Australians

Minutes after his team lifted the ICC Under-19 World Cup Australian coach Wayne Phillips was laying down another challenge for the side.

Australia beat South Africa in today's final at Bert Sutcliffe Oval by seven wickets.

And when asked how many of the side had the potential to play Test cricket, he replied, "All 14 of them.

"It's up to them now."

Phillips said the final success had come after 13 one-day victories in succession against teams of differing quality but it represented an outstanding campaign.

The formula for success had been based on always looking to play their best team.

"Our guys played tremendously well throughout and that needs to be taken into account," he said.

One of the heroes of the day was century-maker Jarrad Burke. He was the only player in the Super League side of the tournament to reach three figures, and he did it when he needed four runs to get his century, and only two runs needed to win the game.

At one stage it seemed he might miss out as captain Cameron White was clouting the ball to all corners. However, he was bowled with just enough runs left for Burke to get the milestone.

"I told Cameron not to worry about me getting 100. I said, 'Let's get it over with, the win will be more satisfying than the century.'

"I just went out today to try and bat through the innings knowing that if I did we should win fairly easily.

"I had been hitting the ball well earlier in the tournament but had been getting myself out. It was one of my best innings and one of the most satisfying," he said.

Australian skipper White said that while it was nice to end up with most runs in the tournament, he would not have minded as a leg-spinner in the Victorian Pura Cup side if he had picked up more than two wickets in the tournament.
