A capable allrounder, he played for Auckland from 1909 to 1928, averaging over 30 with the bat, and taking altogether nearly 100 wickets with his medium-pace bowling. He toured Australia in 1913-14, and after the war captained New Zealand against VS Ranford's Australian side in 1920-21 and against the MCC in 1922-23.
