The University Oval ground is located in Logan Park, which itself was built between 1913 and 1920 on the silted-up inlet of Otago Harbour. The Park contains many sports pitches, and as well as the cricket venue it is also home to the Caledonian Ground, the city's main football (soccer) venue.
A beautiful tree-lined ground with a main pavilion and a grandstand at one end, and plenty of flat grassy banks for spectators, the playing area was expanded and the pitch rotated ahead of Otago switching there in 2004. It had been used occasionally for major cricket since 1978-79. In 2007-08 it hosted its first Test, becoming New Zealand's seventh Test venue, but its second, in December 2008 against West Indies, was controversial because considerable time was lost to rain and the facilities and groundstaff came in for much criticism.
