For more than two centuries, Lord's was a byword for male exclusivity, but on Saturday, June 7, the fairer sex is set to take over the ground. In partnership with the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Foundation, and as part of an initiative to increase the popularity of cricket among female supporters, the second day of Middlesex's County Championship clash with Essex has been officially designated as "Ladies Day".

"Ladies Day is an exclusive and chic date in the Middlesex calendar and we expect it to quickly become a fans' favourite and a place to be seen, socialise and relax," said Vinny Codrington, Middlesex's chief executive. "We are delighted to be promoting cricket to a far wider audience and look forward to a good English summer's day, an array of luxury stalls and events, and of course a first-class game of cricket."

Entry to the match will be £14 for men but free for all women, and as part of the day's events, Middlesex will also be laying on a champagne reception in the Harris Gardens behind the pavilion. Guests will be invited to join the hospitality free of charge, so long as they are dressed in their summer finery.

The Championship Division Two fixture against Essex will be the primary backdrop to the day's events, but a host of flatscreen TVs will also be set up to allow racing fans to watch the Derby at Epsom. There will also be an array of health and beauty outlets on display, and numerous shopping outlets. "The game is set to be very well attended," said Codrington, "and we look forward to welcoming ladies, and gentlemen, to our historic event at Lord's, the home of cricket."
