 Profile

A string of notable performances around the domestic circuit pitchforked Raghuram Bhat into the national team in the 1983-84 season. But his international career was restricted to just two successive matches against Pakistan and West Indies. His first Test victim was Javed Miandad, who was trapped leg-before and the next day he had Mudassar Nazar stumped. In his next Test, he had the wickets of Clive Lloyd and Gus Logie in the same over but these four remained his only wickets.

Bhat was probably discarded too soon for he was a bowler who could be destructive on a responsive pitch. He was capable of turning the ball viciously in helpful conditions and he was the kind of bowler who could run through the opposition. All the same he was able to maintain good control over line and length. Bhat was Karnataka's bow ling mainstay for a decade and finished with 343 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. His best game was the semi-final against Bombay in 1981-82 when he took 13 wickets in the match, including eight in the first innings, including a hat-trick.
