ACC announces dates/format for Under 17 Asia Cup [01.12.2003]

The HKCA has received notification of a new 20-team Under 17 Asia Cup tournamement to be played in India in January 2004. Details are provided in the following letter:

Subject : Junior (Under 17) Asia Cup in India in January 2004.

The subject tournament will be played from the 13th to 27th January 2004 in India. Assuming all 20 member countries participates the initial round (1st round) will be played amongst 16 countries divided in four groups of four countries each. The groups are:

Group A Group B Group C Group D
Malaysia UAE Singapore Hong Kong
Nepal Afghanistan Iran Bhutan
Qatar Kuwait Thailand Saudi Arabia
Brunei Oman Bahrain Maldives

The groupings were drawn in the presence of Mr. P. Krishnaswamy, Treasurer Malaysian Cricket Association, Mr. Zakir Hussain Syed and the CE, ACC. The 1st round matches will be played on 13th, 14th and 16th January 2004 in Vishakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. Group A will play in Vishakhapatnam, Group B in Hyderabad, Group C in Bangalore and Group D in Chennai. Matches will be played on a round robin league basis and two grounds in each centre will be used.

The winners of each group will join the four Test playing countries, viz, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the 2nd round. The 2nd round will be two groups of four teams each. The 2nd round matches will be played on the 19th, 20th and 22nd January in Bangalore and Vishakhapatnam. Matches will be played on a round robin league basis and two grounds in each centre will be used. The groupings are:

Group 1 will play in Bangalore and Group 2 in Vishakhapatnam. Winners of group 1 will play the runner?s up of group 2 in the first semi final while the winner?s of group 2 will play the runner's up of group 1 in the second semi final on 25th January. The final will be played on 27th January 2004.  The semi finals and the final will be played in Bangalore.

All matches will be day matches and shall comprise of a maximum of 45 over per inning. Players will wear white clothing and red cricket balls will be used. 

Each team shall comprise of 18 members, that is, 14 players, Manager, Coach, Physiotherapist and Umpire. Each team shall be provided in the Hotel with 7 twin sharing and 4 single rooms on bed and buffet breakfast and 6 pieces of laundry per person per day basis. Each team member will be provided with a daily allowance of the equivalent of US$25 (US Dollars twenty five) to cover meal costs and incidentals.

All players for the subject tournament must be born on or after 1st January 1987.

Teams are requested to buy the economy class international air ticket for their 18 members and send the invoice to ACC office for reimbursement. 

We are still awaiting confirmation of participation from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Brunei, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.  We shall be obliged if you please confirm on or before December 5, 2003.
