Day five, second Test versus India at Melbourne

The threat of rain stealing our opportunity for a sixth straight Test victory had sent a few nerves through the changing room over the past few days, but thanks to more wonderful contributions from every member of this team we are now 2-0 up in this series. Whether it was Gilly, Punter or Junior with the bat yesterday or our bowling attack today the fact is we are playing brilliant cricket together as a very united team. The sign of a good team is when someone always has the ability and desire to do the job required for his team-mates and, as we have seen all summer, this is happening regularly with this squad of mates.

When Warney trapped a tired-looking Sachin Tendulkar in front of his stumps we all knew deep down that this would be our match. After a perfect spell of leg-spin bowling, even the great Indian batting master succumbed to the pressure. From my position at short-leg, it was apparent the Indian captain was feeling a little weary after what has been a tough tour for his team. He looked tired as he strived to save his team from a second Test defeat. On a number of times before he was out he took deep breaths as though he was really feeling the pinch. After the amount of time he has spent in the centre, and the extra pressure of captaincy, his downfall was a sign of the dwindling spirits of our opposition.

Maybe this was symbolic of the confidence and inspiration oozing from this team. Finishing off this Test with the sun shining upon us was the perfect way to end what has been a happy Christmas week for the Australian Test team.

Merry Xmas again, from Melbourne, JL

PS: Having all of our families in Melbourne for the Test match helped make it a very special week. Many thanks should go to the Australian Cricket Board who are looking after its players like only the best of employers could. Thanks to the ACB from all of the players.
