A Clinical Display: Looking back on the third Test versus Pakistan

Overwhelmed by the incredible public support after the Hobart Test match I was determined to finish the Pakistan tour with another big performance at my home ground. This was made easy by the focus within the team to beat the Pakistanis 3-0 in the series. Our goal before the match was to play tough, disciplined and clinical cricket and dispel any theory of an inability to perform in so called "dead rubber" Test matches.

When the last Pakistan wicket fell on Sunday afternoon it would be fair to say our goal was achieved. With Michael Kasprowicz and Brett Lee coming into the squad we went about our business from the moment Steve Waugh lost the toss on Friday morning. Even though the pitch looked flat I wasn't unhappy to have seen Wasim Akram win the toss and bat first. Traditionally there is always some additional life in the WACA turf early and paired with the steep bounce it is always tough batting during the first session of any game.

Coming to the WACA is always a challenge for any opposition. The extra pace and bounce is so foreign too most other surfaces in the world that it takes time to adapt to the differing conditions. Like the Aussies visiting the spinning pitches in the subcontinent, the overseas batsmen must find it nerve-wracking when they see the first ball flying past their ears off a reasonable length.

From ball one we were fired up and with the opportunity to beat one of the most talented teams in the world 3-0 we went hard at our opponents. Continuing their great form, 'Flemo' and 'Pigeon' bowled superbly, as did 'Kaspa' who has plenty to prove after his rollercoaster last 12 months. He is a fantastic team man who was a popular re-selection in the team.

Having a partnership with Ricky was almost as much fun as it was with Gilly only a few days before at Bellerive. Although he had made three consecutive ducks, 'Punter' had the faith of all his teammates when he joined me at the crease. He has been hitting the ball sweetly in the nets since arriving home from Zimbabwe so we all knew a big score was just around the corner.

His effort was sensational as he smashed the Pakistani attack to every advertising board on the ground. His cutting and pulling was awesome, as were his drives in front of the wicket. Batting with him was a buzz as, once again, one of my teammates punished the opponent while I lent him support at the other end. You can't buy experience on the shelf and I truly think my experience at the WACA gave me a huge advantage when it came my turn to bat.

With a lead that must have been as daunting as dental surgery, our bowlers then finished off the job with a ruthless display of fast and leg-spin bowling. In another disciplined display, our ambition of winning the first three Test matches of the summer was achieved early on Sunday afternoon.

Every player in the team feels fantastic about this result. For John Buchanan in his first series as coach and Steve Waugh in his first series as captain in Australia, the summer couldn't have started off better. Although everyone was ready to celebrate in grand style, our new coach called a meeting at the hotel before the party began. In the course of a half-hour review of the series we all realise that there is plenty of room for improvement. This is very exciting as we have just beaten Pakistan 3-0 and yet we can play a lot better. Exciting times lie ahead in Australian cricket!
