Day four, first Test versus Pakistan at Brisbane

In terms of pure entertainment this Test match has been a beauty. Never before can I remember seeing so many boundaries hit by both teams. First it was Inzamam, Anwar and Yousuf followed by Slater, Blewett, Mark Waugh, Gilchrist, and this morning Warne. The show continued this afternoon with Anwar and Yousuf again taking the aggressive option to pull their team back into this match. At over 200 runs behind, many lesser teams would have disintegrated. Not Pakistan, who played with boldness reserved for a very tough cricket team.

After taking three early cheap wickets it looked like we might steamroll the Pakistan batting line-up like the guys did in the World Cup Final on June 20. Our confidence was sky high as we threw everything at Anwar and Yousuf. Unfortunately a couple of dropped catches, spells of loose bowling and periods of combative batting have robbed us of the early opportunity to take a decisive 1-0 lead in this series.

With Steve Waugh's wife Lynette already 10 days overdue for their second child, she was very upset with her brother-in-law Mark for dropping Anwar early in the innings. Her thinking was that an early result was on the cards and the chances of Stephen being home for the birth would have become reality had 'Junior' taken that catch at second slip. If you gave him the same catch a thousand times I would back him to take it 999 times. It is funny how the pressure of Test cricket can play its funny little tricks.

As it now stands the final day tomorrow promises to be a thriller. We need to take six Pakistani wickets to bat again and chase a score for a 1-0 lead. On a fantastic batting pitch I believe we still hold the upper hand. The less we need to chase the better but whatever the task we can do it. This is a great Gabba batting strip and if we can get through the new ball attack of Akhtar and Akram then we will be in a very strong position.

By this time tomorrow we will know for sure who has come up the victor of this epic and entertaining battle.
