Bon voyage Swampy Marsh
As a player he was an inspiration, not only for his ability and
achievements with the bat, but more notably for his incredible work
ethic and dedication to his team. There have been few better team men,
few better workers and few better blokes in Australian cricket. Today
was Swampy Marsh's last day at the helm of the Australian cricket team,
the last day that he will hit catches, share a coach's advice or play
the diplomat, father figure or task master required as the Australian
cricket coach. He will be missed!
Working with Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh, Swamp has been a contributing
factor behind the success of this team since he took over the coaching
role three years ago. Respected in his playing days for his hard-working
nature, he helped instill a sense of discipline in the team by leading
by example. He was always willing to go that extra yard with any of the
players if it was for the good of the team. He prepared both the test
and one day teams admirably and should take more credit and recognition
than he has possibly received since he has been coach. He has many
feathers in his cap throughout both his playing and coaching careers and
while he won't be leaving the game all together, he should be very proud
of all of his achievements throughout his illustrious career.
If nothing else Swamp is just a damn good bloke who loves being around
the team and seeing everyone doing well and reaching his full potential.
He will be missed around the team but all the boys wish him all the very
best for the future, knowing that he has made his decision with all the
best of intentions in mind. In a few days' time when we are taking
catches, running laps or hitting cricket balls in Zimbabwe, we know
Swamp would love to be there with us, but we also know he will be very
happy and content sitting back in Perth watching the action on Foxtel.
Here are three cheers to Swampy Marsh!
