FRIDAY 17 March 2000
Funky, Warney and Slats our first Test heroes
Three of the heroes from the first Test in Auckland were record-breaker
Shane Warne, off-spinning veteran Colin Miller and, surprisingly to
some, our dashing opening batsman Michael Slater.
As part of tour tradition one of the first adventures of the fine
committee is to buy the worst clothing outfit possible as a 'daktari'
prize for the tour. The daktari is awarded every week to one of the boys
who have stepped out of line in one way or another; on the field or off
the field, and this week it happened to be Slats. Unfortunately our
dynamo opener miscued a pullshot while receiving throw downs at
practise. This wouldn't usually be a problem accept that this particular
stroke cannoned into the side of Michael Kasprowicz's jaw. At our last
fines meeting Slats was unanimously voted as the daktari winner and he
was ordered by the team to wear his newly acquired outfit at the end of
the Test match.
In our post-Test match celebration he dressed early in the daktari and
was last seen wearing it in the wee hours of the morning. He provided us
all with plenty of entertainment, upholding the tradition with great
pride and enthusiasm. As you can see by the postcard he looked pretty
ordinary but distinguished himself with an outstanding performance on
the night.
